Much of the social history of the Western world over the past three decades has involved replacing what worked with what sounded good. — Thomas Sowell (Be warned: I assure you Sowell is not referring to what you think but quote is still great.)
I read about an Eskimo hunter who asked the local missionary priest, ‘If I did not know about God and sin, would I go to hell?’ ‘No,’ said the priest, ‘not if you did not know.’ ‘Then why,’ asked the Eskimo earnestly, ‘did you tell me?’ — Annie Dillard, Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, 1974
Let’s parse this… economy’s in the toilet in large part because the middle class is heavily indebted with a major loss of wealth from collapsed and collapsing home values… unemployment is and will be double the norm for as far as can be seen… Social Security is going to be whacked, healthcare is evermore out of control… and now the crumbs of a middle class tax cut passed to the wealthy can be given a windfall isn’t expected to anything to help the economy. No shit — and thanks, Big Media, for sitting on the truth til too late.
Doomed! If only we can follow Iceland’s example….
It’s a point barely worth making, but the tax cut deal demonstrates, for the umpteenth time, that self-proclaimed deficit hawks are frauds. We can’t afford unemployment benefits or public investment, the fake hawks say — but when it come to cutting taxes on the rich, money is literally no object.
It’s just possible, as Atrios says, that some journalists don’t understand this; if you do up-close-and-personal reporting, judging politicians by what they say and how they come across rather than by the content of their proposals, you might actually be snookered. But again: none of the people who claim about the deficit actually view it as anything more than a stick with which to beat down progressive ideas.(Link.)
Elizabeth Edwards: Good-bye to a very rare class act.
Objectivist assholes get justly fucked. School for Objectivists shuttered because of lack of federal handouts.
Just a recent example of why the Big Media are disgusting, stupid and, at the end of the day, pretty irrelevant.
There’s a problem revealing the scope of the failure that is the Afghanistan invasion? Not to me there isn’t. Thanks, WikiLeaks! Note to Our Leaders: Do we really need to pimp little boys to Afghani cops? Really? After Assange gets imprisoned or killed, maybe the State Dept. can get around to defending this. And apropos that link:
This is exactly why we need to classify information!
I am glad to know our government and our contractors are acting on our behalf, and are preventing us from knowing these hard facts.
The real problem is reporting on this kind of thing. It’s unseemly, and it hurts America.
America’s most honest politician wants the Times investigated for espionage. (The asshole is Joe Lieberman.)
WikiLeaks defended in a way that matters a little.
Query: How stupid to you have to be to call for an anti-WikiLeaks computer virus?
Is this yet another Obamination?
