Query Answered? Piracy: Threat or Boon?

Does illegal piracy of intellectual property — films, recordings, comic books — actually hurt.

You’d assume so. But OTOH, I think a lot of it is stuff that the downloader wouldn’t buy anyway and could actually inspire sales. Download album, enjoy in crappy quality, buy the real thing for a high-quality recording. Download questionable movie you’re disinclined to see, hate it, not go see it or buy it anyway.

However, forget my opinion. Problem is dearth of hard data.
